Entrance to the school. I remember this gate fondly. Me and my brothers Marin and Deon Van Zyl entered through these gates for about 5 to 7 years during our primary school days. See the old school motto, 'Saaiplaas Laerskool'. Saaiplaas Primary School.

Main entrance to the school. I proudly remember this gate; Mr F.T. Weyers were the school principal back then during 1965 to 1971, and his office was in the admin block (offices in the background). I remember hoisting the RSA flag on the post in front of the admin area, and proudly singing the national anthem.

Die Stem van Suid-Afrika

Uit die blou van onse hemel,
Uit die diepte van ons see,
Oor ons ewige gebergtes,
Waar die kranse antwoord gee,

The Call of South-Africa

Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom
In South Africa our land!

Below: Mr Luther (Meneer Luther). Frank van der Merwe Primary School ( Laerskool Saaiplaas). Primary School attended 1965-1971. Early childhood days.

'Meneer Luther' taught Woodwork  (Houtwerk) and 'Kartonwerk' (boardwork) - passionate  rugby coach. He used to whip us playfully with a the lanyard of his coach whistle to encourage us to give our best in the loose scrums (rugby practice). "Man did that make a difference hearing the lanyard whipping and his voice thundering: "Gaan in daai losskrum in, moenie rond staan nie man, kry die bal" ('Get into the loose ruck, don't stand around, get the ball'). Ha, ha! Such good memories.

'Meneer Grobbies' the passionate  rugby coach; provincial rugby player himself. He played for North Free State (Noord-Vrystaat) in the fly half position (losskakel) for many years . I remember him kicking the rugby ball; our jaws would just drop in awe of his power and accuracy! He also drove a light green Datsun 1600 SSS coupe vehicle (the 1970's). He added thinsilver stripes to the side of his car running from the tail lights to the head lights. His car was his pride and joy, and we as studentsadmired all the additions and customisations.

'I remember the assemblies - singing the school song and national anthem - and the movies we have watched on Friday nights. Many school concerts and plays were performed on this stage.
